Jenny (41) is a volunteer for Leicestershire County Council’s Work Club, a service that links into the Work.Live.Leicestershire partnership. Situated in Hugglescote, she initially came to the club for employment reasons after struggling to secure a job due to chronic illness.
Whilst Jenny was successful in securing work with the support of the service, it was the voluntary experience she gained that she found most rewarding. After a decline in health, Jenny was unable to maintain a paid position due to urgent medical care. The club was a consistent source of support, confidence and development —where she was later approached to consider volunteering when she felt able. In supporting one of the local Work Clubs, “ it makes me feel like I still have a purpose,” she said.
Noting the importance of reaching people beyond the two work clubs currently operating in rural Leicestershire, Jenny is optimistic about new pop-up clubs launching with Work.Live.Leicestershire. With plans to cut bus services, she notes that travel is a difficulty for people living further afield. Aiming to tackle factors causing rural isolation such as travel, Work.Live.Leicestershire aims to help more individuals find their purpose, alongside Jenny.
