Working in textiles for many years, Ling turned to volunteering to find new opportunities. She now works on the Work. Live. Leicestershire project as an Advisor with our partner Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL).
Prior to this, Ling was an established merchandiser which enabled her to be creative, but often involved tight deadlines and high levels of stress. Although she had considered volunteering, this thought remained at the back of her mind whilst she dedicated time to her role. When Ling was offered voluntary redundancy, she felt it could be a positive new start.
Ling found a temporary part-time job so she could explore creative unpaid opportunities local to her. From providing information at printing studios, to ushering at local theatres, this experience developed her confidence and presented new career opportunities. She noted that "If I wasn't a volunteer where I engage with people - I wouldn't be as a confident as I am now.'
Recognising the important role Voluntary Action Leicestershire had in her journey, she started helping the organisation to find the right opportunities for others too. Since then her first-hand experience and enthusiasm has resulted in Ling joining the Work. Live. Leicestershire team at VAL.
Working rurally with our project, she hopes to share her story with others and illustrate the value and variety that volunteering can offer. For more information about volunteering with our project, you can get in touch with us here.
