Before joining Work. Live. Leicestershire in January, Pauline (61) was new to the area after personal circumstances left her homeless. With the support of our project, she has since developed her confidence and skills through volunteering and spoken out about her experiences on local radio.
Pauline had been working throughout her life, until she was faced with difficult life events. This impacted upon her mental health and she was unable to keep working. With little income and support, Pauline lost her home, furniture and confidence. She moved to rural Leicestershire to live with her daughter but found it difficult to meet new people and start a new life.
Learning about local Work. Live. Leicestershire services, Pauline came along to her local Work Club ran by Leicestershire County Council. Here, she was supported to build her IT skills and apply for volunteering opportunities. She agreed to feature on radio Leicester with our project and share her story with the county. Reflecting on the experience, Pauline said: “I’m glad I did it. I felt like I’d pushed myself out of my comfort zone.”
Since featuring on the radio, Pauline is identifying what voluntary opportunities could shape her future. Working with Voluntary Action Leicestershire to achieve this, she has now applied for new opportunities and courses that will help her secure employment. She is hopeful that with continued support, she can continue to develop within the project to ultimately achieve this.
